While all this new tech provides us a view of crime happening in real time, it's not the entire picture. To really understand what is happening in Tampa, we need to look at crime index percentages, which compare crime rates between cities, states, and at a national level per 100,000 people.

Tampa is considered a major city, and with most major cities comes a higher crime rate. However, compared to similar-sized cities, overall, Tampa is considered to be pretty safe. According to NeighborhoodScout. The overall crime rate in Tampa is 8,145 per 100,000 people, which is 18% higher than the national average. Violent crime in Tampa is 7% higher than the national average, and property crime in Tampa is about 23% lower than the national average.

However, the bigger picture shows that Tampa has seen a huge decline in violent crime in recent years. In fact, violent crime rates fell almost 22% between 2016 and 2019. When comparing a major city to the national averages, it can be a little misleading, so it’s important to see how Tampa stacks up against other cities of similar size. For instance, while crime rates are 18% higher than the national average in Tampa, Orlando is actually 124% higher than the national average!
